The ancient tradition of “De sa bidda de is pingiadas”

The production of terracotta artefacts for everyday use has characterised the economy of Pabillonis since ancient times. The town was known, in the past and up until fifty years ago, by the name of “Sa bidda de is pingiadas” (town of pots). These, together with the “tianus” pans and other terracotta products, transported by carts, were sold by Pabillonis merchants throughout the island. Few competing island laboratories could compete with the skill of the Pabillonese artisans. This art had ancient origins in the village, and as evidenced by documents in the municipal archives, in the early 19th century there were as many as 13 pottery workshops. The technique, the unique characteristics of the clay, and the professionalism of the Pabillonis artisans made the product unique and original. The last potter in the village, Giuseppe Piras, closed his shop in 1967, but other young artisans have opened their own and successfully continue the ancient art of Pabillonis pottery.
